LECTURE-DIALOGUE

between Roberto Pinotti, Giovanni Pelosini & Gaspare O. Melcher (Vada, 20th september 1998)

A Roswell quindi cosa succede?

G.P. : Perché no?

Chiamatelo feeling, telepatia, sensibilità o come volete. Però accadono delle comunicazioni non verbali. Cosa significa?

R.P. : Ma mica solo su questo argomento!

G.P. : Guardate i Tarocchi!

ENGLISH VERSION

G.M. : Three years ago a controversial “Santilli footage” was broadcast to a vast TV audience, documenting the alleged post mortem examination of an alien. It immediately caused disconcert, enthusiasm, refusal, and in general strong emotional reactions among many people. Double T bars also appeared in the footage, about 50 cm long, with mysterious ideograms chiselled on them. The footage was associated with the famous 1947 Roswell UFO crash.
I will now ask Prof. Roberto Pinotti, Secretary of CUN (National Ufologic Centre), director of two specialized reviews, and author of many books on UFOs, to update us on the Roswell case.

R.P. : The phenomenon was born on 24 June, 1947. A report of what was later on called “unidentified flying objects” appeared in the American newspapers for the first time. Pilot Kenneth Arnold was the first man to speak about this phenomenon, after he had spotted some strange dish-shaped flying objects cruising the skies of Washington State, along the Pacific coast. Calls from people intensified during the following days, and the press paid much attention to it. It appeared later on that the phenomenon was not new in the least, on the contrary it was old and already heard of, although identifications had taken place in somewhat different terms. As a matter of fact, a wave of brand-new sightings had taken place in 1896/97 in the US, of what we now call UFO, but which used to be called “air ships”. The Roswell episode died as quickly as it was born in July 1947, after only a few days had elapsed since pilot Kenneth Arnold’s first spotting. An eerie light was seen tracking the sky above New Mexico, supposedly the night between 2 and 3 July. A farmer, one Mr. McBrazel, reported Sheriff Wilcox the finding of mysterious fragments. The sheriff informed the Roswell Army airforce base, pretty peculiar those days since it sheltered the 509th bombing group, the only possessor of atomic weapons. Nearby was the Alamogordo base, where nuclear tests were being carried out, the White Sands base, where the first missiles were tested starting from the famous German V2, and finally Socorro, with its big radio-telescope.
What was going on in roswell then? We know the farmer’s report, the sheriff informed the Military who sent their base security officer, Major Jesse Marcel, right on the spot. Marcel reached the area and recovered part of the fragments, which his wife and son saw before he went back to his base.
The episode caused interest, journalists sprang to action; then from the Roswell Base a press release admitted having recovered fragments of a flying saucer. It was an afficial statement indeed, released by the U.S. Army. But suddenly General Ramey, sent by the Pentagon, declared it had all been a mistake, and the fragments belonged to a shattered aerostatic meteorological balloon of a new type.
For about thirty years, nobody ever talked about it again. It was only after such a long period that research resumed, when a great number of witnesses suddenly appeared. There are almost 200 of them today, quite a lot. If you go to Roswell today, you will find that the few survivors, in their seventies or eighties by now, are angry for not having had a chance to tell their story before, angry for having this possibility only today that things have changed. For there is no doubt that the U.S. military authorities were heavily involved in the process of shutting the mouth to the key witnesses.
The Santilli footage represents the new element at last, although very controversial because it is still not easy to conclude for good. We do not know whether this material is totally authentic, or whether it has been tampered with in order to spread information not at all coherent, perhaps with the intent to instil doubt into people.
Well, an old Army cameraman came out, sold the footage of an auopsy to the English documentarist Santilli, a document we all have seen on TV in October 1995. It certainly is the autopsy of a living creature, not a dummy, although not a conventional human being, not even one affected by some particular genetic disease. Moreover, in the footage some metallic fragments with impressed symbols were visible, quite similar to the ones Marcel’s son had been talking about.
The Roswell story has been recently enriched by the testimony of Colonel Phil Corso, a high Pentagon official who recently died in his eighties. He said he had been in charge for the technological conversion of machines found into Roswell’s flying saucer during the 60’s. more flying saucers are knownbecause Americans allegedly possess more than one.
Corso said tools like integrated circuits, laser, microwaves, ultra-resistent and optical fibres would result from researches made on all the objects found at Roswell. Those were not inventions of a single person, but rather of a whole team; because the input has been given by others, namely the U.S. Government, which has stealthily introduced such technologies in the industry, while hiding their true provenience. It would be rather disturbing to admit that our technology could have taken advantage of an original alien input.
But let us go back to our main subject. What is the value of the symbols emerging from this story? As soos as 20 years ago I gathered about 20 episodes in my book “Contatti cosmici” published by Mediterranee, contacts through messages in letters, graphics, or symbols, all possibly a consequence of the presence of biological entities associated with flying saucers.
From a symbolic and semiologic point of view, these beings associated with the UFOs evidently have their own writing or graphics or symbols. That shoul remind us of another topic of great modernity: the so-called “crop circles”, or circles in wheat, which in some istances (not many indeed) have been linked to the UFO phenomenon. But in most cases they have been found without any kind of signature. A general hypothesis is that they are real ideograms made by some intelligence with an aim if not linguistic, at least symbolic; and if that was really done, it evidently had a purpose we may not grasp, but which certainly existed. The UFO phenomenon is older than we think, therefore related manifestations might have taken place at the time of ancient civilizations; evidence belonging to such societies has been found, e. g. symbols, scripts, or graffiti with a symbolic meaning, in other words recurrent themes with a common ground. Such linkages seem to close the circle. The bridge between past and present times draws our attention to the future via yesterday’s and today’s events. On the other hand there is the artist’s sensitivity; he looks at all those phenomena in an effort to understand reality and the beings’ real intentios. The artist is able to grasp meanings, although perhaps just at a symbolic level, whereas other people are not. And that is just what Gaspare has perceived, what he has tried to do with his works about the Roswell symbols.

G.M. : When I came across those symbols on TV, so similar to those I have been using for more than 25 years in my paintings, I got puzzled, curious, and excited. Then, as it often happens, chance gave me the answer: I had the opportunity to come across writings of the orientalist Zecharia Sitchin. I have read everything about this concept of history based on translation of cuneiform Sumerian letters telling about a twelth planet inside our solar system, from which colonizers of planet
Earth allegedly came and taught us agriculture, astronomy, and architecture. I wrote to Sitchin and asked him for his opinion about Roswell, and he answered he was writing a book with the promising title “The cosmic code”, a slogan that after all also belongs to my pictorial and ideographic research. As for the Roswell symbols, Sitchin thinks they are somewhat similar to the old Greek alphabet, itself derived from the Semitic one.
I now turn to Prof. Giovanni Pelosini, a Yoga teacher, a researcher in ancient symbols, the author of a book on the spiral symbol and of another one about Tarots publishd by Il Mosaico.
We have had an emotional impact with the Santilli footage, since it came out of the blue for us, whereas specialists have had more time to study it thoroughly. What kind of questions has this footage suggested to you, and what do you think these particular symbols transmitted to us?

G.P. : The question are certainly the ones Roberto Pinotti has already answered with much competence before, i. e. about the symbols themselves and their link with past and our history.
Some graphic symbols might resemble our ancient alphabets, particularly the proto-Phoenician alphabet, alphabets derived from hieroglyphs, which were ideograms before being letters, runes, or other ancient graphical symbols. But the big doubt still remains: whether or not there is a link between those symbols and the Roswell symbols has to be proved yet. Where would such possible link derive from? Have there been attempts by hypothetical alien entities to contact us, to write in a terrestrial language in some way? This would be the first hypothesis. Or do our own alphabets and signs really derive from ancient extra-terrestrial symbols? In any case the issue deserves a deeper understanding of quantity and qualities of possible relevant similarities.
Another question this topic raises to me concerns the phenomenon of non-graphical messages a great deal of people receive, more and more often, called “channelling”. In most cases people receiving these messages declare they speak on behalf of entities denomitated angels, leading spirits, or even a part of the deepest recessis of the subjects’ own psyche, their own soul or (if you prefer) mind.

G.M. : Do you mean to suggest my pictorial research on the Roswell symbols is a sort of “channeling”?

G.P. : Why not! Almost certainly the “thin” messages, whatever their source, might flock by in all possible ways according to the personal characteristics of each individual. So I would like to bring together the “crop circles” as alleged symbolical messages, the Roswell graphic symbols, and the mediumistic messages. I ask the expert, Roberto, whether or not he is aware of any investigation carried out about that.

R.P. : You have just faced an issue which is pretty important. In the 50’s, beside the traditional spotting of some UFO, persons later called “contactists” appeared for the first time. They sid thy were having regular and prolonged encounters with extraterrestrial pilots. The first important contactist has been astrophile George Adamski, an American of Polish descent, who declared have met some extraterrestrials. Among other things, he had produced some pictures he got by means of a small telescope.
While some people have talked about physical encounters with alleged aliens, many sensitive people strangely started to feel, after 1947, somehow peculiar symptoms. Once, such characters came up with just phenomena of writing mediumship, of tele-writing, of messages from Tibetan guides, Indian gurus, angels or whatever. But here extraterrestrial pilots appeared, handing over messages. What is the real importance of such messages?
It is not possible to conclude, but it is fair to say “channeling” should be regarded with some attention. It is likely that some stimulations, also artistic ones, are the result of some form of induction, either direct or indirect. That means we have many tools, like dreams or telepathic transmission.
Phenomena exist. Call them feeling, telepathy, sensitivity, or whatever. Non-verbal communication does take place. What does that mean? Signals are released into the air and subsequently caught in some way. It is like someone broadcasting a signal through the air. Anybody could be a radio receiver; what happens is that a sophisticated instrument works well, a less sophisticated one works badly, a broken one receives almost no messages, a switched-off radio does not work at all. Therefore “alpha” waves, the vehicle to mind transmission, do exist. Wether someone could interact at this level remains to be seen yet: we could then hypothesize that artistic inspiration itself is the result of some sort of induction only a few people get, thanks to their particular sensitivity.

G.M. : In any case the Roswell symbols remind me of my past when in Amsterdam, in the 70’s, I was studying ideograms and painting a series of big canvases called “The series of ten”. In that period I used to believe the concept had passed from reality to drawing to ideogram, and finally to writing. When I saw the Roswell symbols, a doubt came up that such a linear and progressive concept might have been wrong. Those symbols have a strong potential and I do not believe there is just one way of reading them. I do not believe they are phonetic symbols, maybe rather syllabic.
Roberto’s own explanation of the Roswell incident reminds of the first writing of six symbols with hand-prints nearby, that Marcel’s son allegedly saw. They came from the exterior of the ship, which after its first impact would have bounced, hurled farther away, and was eventually surreptitiously retrieved by the US Army. The series of 25 symbols on two fragments of the double T bar, on the contrary, should have been recovered from inside the wreck.
As I sid, my research concerned the potentiality of the symbols and not their meaning; but now that 51 years have elapsed since man possesses a writing allegedly of alien origin, I ask Roberto: are you aware of any research concerning those symbols?

R.P. : We know nothing about this kind of research. Speaking again about symbology and above mentioned Socorro (a place in New Mexico), though, I can recall a famous episode which took place there. One day, in 1964, vicesheriff Zamorra saw a flying object zipping low towards the desert near the road he was cruising. He alerted the base for back-up, left his car, and sauntered towards this clear, whitish, big egg-shaped object which had just landed. He faintly spotted two figures for a while, before the object suddenly retrieved its three legs, lifted, and took off with a bluish glow, almost in front of him. Shortly after back-up did arrive, but only to realize that what had remained were the clear tracks of the three legs on the soil. This is a case US Authorities had to admit. There is no explanation, but the funny thing is that the sheriff had clearly seen a red symbol which showed up against the whitish body of that flying egg. We are not able to give any explanation, but that symbol must have meant something to anyone who was inside that ship; someone could say it was a sign, a symbol, whatever its provenience. In other words, it was no phonetic symbol.
The research Gaspare conducts, based on these concepts or archetypes, concerns issues we also find in the cabbalistic symbols or in the tarot symbols, which have an archetypical content clearly beyond their phonetic message.

G.M. : Reading again tha chapter dedicated to Greek writing in Faulmann’s history of writing (1880), I am surprised that the alphabet is arranged in a 24-symbol circle. I am not convinced these symbols have a mere phonetical function, because the 24th quite obviously refers to time measuring.

G.P. : The Greeks’ problem was they used to have different needs from those of the Phoenicians; that is why that alphabet has been adapted to their language. Furthermore they had another language, therefore with sounds probably neither representable nor represented in the previous system of writing. Therefore they had to add or pull away something. The original alphabet was however made of 22 signs, the same 22 found in the Tarot’s Major Arcanes. Even the original letters of an older alphabet, the North-Semitic one, not only had a phonetic value, but also had a presumably important sense in everyday life 3600 years ago, such as ” bully head”, “home”, “camel”, not to mention other meanings possibly more esoteric, mystical, or magical. Scientific knowledge was full of magical or mystical aspects in those times.

R.P. : It was all one.

G.P. : Esactly! Magic, science, and religion were all parts of a single doctrine.

R.P. : We are the only ones to separate all that, we do that arbitrarily. By the way let’s consider this: it seems very important to me that beside the value of the different symbologies, Roswell has probably served as a problem brought to everybody’s attention, just like the “crop circles” phenomenon has.
Gaspare is connected to this through his artistic sensitivity. What matters is a people-targeted approach to UFOs. The possibility the media have is to broadcast news. On the contrary, if an artist manages to elaborate and to give his own interpretation, the message does a better job, and this is equally important. It’s all about working at different levels: what the artist can do towards the public goes beyond rationality or mediumism, beyond space and time. Therefore it gives a sort of …

G.P. : …privileged route.

R.P. : Exactly. There is a subtle contact, neither phonetical nor written, between the artist and people. They understand just as well whether the artist is able to transmit the message. And that is the same message media and scientists can give, but the artist certainly does it better and more deeply.

G.M. : A symbol or an ideogram are chromatic vehicles, representing also their own emotional and poetical content. Giving an ideogram chromatic spatiality is almost like making it three-dimensional, projecting it into a sort of archetypical landscape in which the graphical structures of the superimposed symbols are interwowen. In these comparisons new combinations and magical formulas often come out; I surely perceive their pictorial aura, but I often guess another one which remains latent. Artistic creation brings an intense emotion which stores up on the canvas. Once out of the studio, this emotion is worth only if genuine; mediated or censored reports can hardly reach such a worth.

R.P. : What we were trying to say is that different parameters exist and utterly impossible to compare.

G.M. : I repeat once again that I am surprised we know nothing about research on the Roswell symbols: it seems just unbelievable to me!

R.P. : There are other issues we know nothing about!

G.P. : Just look at the Tarots! They could be studied like any other ancient text, the Bible for istance, given their antiquity, but scientists usually do not bother.

G.M. : The “Golden Tarots” symbols Giovanni has published bear themselves quite a resemblance to the Roswell symbols.

G.P. : In my research I have found significant links between the so-called “Tarots’ Major Arcane”, the ancient North Semitic alphabet, and astrology. To begin with, the letters of the most ancient alphabet known are 22, like the tarots’ cards. Here is why these symbols appear in the “Golden Tarots” cards too. To me Tarots, like the ancient letters, represent archetypes, but they are also an ancient illustrated book the meaning of which has been long lost. In other words they are a crypted message coming from the past, like the complexity of astrology and, from a point of vue both architectural and mathematical, the big Giza pyramid.
All these messages imply an extremely high level of know-how of all kinds, we are just beginning to understand thanks to modern technology.
Whether these messages arrive from our far ancestors, or from a society lost in the past, or from extraterrestrial societies always in touch with our planet, we do not know yet; by the way, this is a problem Raymond Drake, Peter Kolosimo, and then Beauval and Hancock have faced before.

R.P. : A rather important fact should be stressed. Someone thinks the Tarots themselves, whose origin is utterly unknown, could be the transposition, say pictorial, of a series of symbols with different aims; just like the I Ching is a system of 64 signs used for a mechanized kind of consulting machine, where you ask it an opinion over some intention you have. It is though someone had devised a sort of rudimentary computer you could consult by tossing three coins …

G.M. : The consultation of the I Ching is rather made by using 50 dry stems of the milfoil plant, where one of the 64 answers corresponds to an archetype of landscape.

R.P. : Or just take the horoscope in the newspapers: there is surely nothing serious about them. Things might be different for the personal horoscope. Look, this takes us right back to what I was saying about Tarots and the I Ching. It is a fact that astrology and astronomy once were one subject, and the great astronomists from the past, like Galileo, were astrologists too. What does it mean? Traditional astrology, with the zodiac signs and their characteristics, has some information source; but was is it? And where does it come from? Well, we do not know. We donot know who gave the first input. The past is linked to the present and projects itself into the future, which is probably a result of the past. Someone might suppose there has been a lost or badly conserved heritage, later resumed in concepts like astrology, the I Ching, the Tarots, and all these “forbidden arts”. Let’s say they are probablysimple rudiments of a far superior knowledge, reduced and then trasmitted in that way. But who gave the input? This is the problem.

G. P. : An extra-terrestrial origin has yet to be proved. It could be all about a lost society, very advanced, like the one found in Plato’s “Timaeus”.

G.M. : Contemporary art encourages a curious, open glance to all known and unknown realities, stimulates an open mind before such a present which is so uncertain, painful but also (like this debate proves) fantastic. “Science-fiction” realities like the alleged alien presence on earth with their almost archaic symbology, question our concept of history, evolution, exact science, religion, and even art. Many concepts will have to be revised and reformulated. There is a whole context in which we have been moving with too many artificial certainties which now eventually tumble down.

G.P. : I would like to quote Ovid as a conclusion: “Et ignotas animum dimittit in artes”. Our soul turns unknown things into art.
